Chain of Retribution

Platform- RM2k3
Language- English

Story
A chain game, sent from person to person, each putting in their part of the epic story in their own style.

When two mercenaries accepted an escort job--thought to be a swift and easy-- they found themselves involved into a global conspiracy that would shake the very core of the earth.

Characters
Bild
Siegmund:
A mercenary for hire who was asked to escort Rise to the capital city. He's a bit naive but has a good heart.

Bild
Reinhardt:
Siegmunds brother. He works together with Siegmund. He's the more serious of the 2 and more organized.

Bild
Rise:
A magician girl, she needs to get to the capital city. She goes and hires some help because she knows the trip isn't going to be so easy...

Bild
Domitian:
A warrior who is spoke of in legends. People know little about who he actually is. Domitian arrives to the capital city because of a letter.

Bild
Valeria:
A strong and calm warrior, she travels with Domitian for the same reason. While benevolent, she also has little tolerance for stupidity.

Features
*New twist on the battle system: Each character is divided into 3 categories. Striker, Balance or Passive. Striker types regain MP in battle by attacking only. They'll gain 20 MP this way, and are usually more for saving up for a big attack.
Balance types regain 10 MP regardless of what command is used. Their skills tend to cost less but are not usually focused on having a big final attack to use.
Passive types regain 30 MP when you defend. They also start with the most MP in a battle and are Mage-types.

*Encounter Gauge which fills up as you fight encounters (which are seen on the map). Once filled, you can open up a special chest in the area.

*Party changing system

Nice. Sounds quite solid and interesting. I'm curious about the gameplay.

But I'd like to know the influence and rules set for this chain stuff. I don't think there has been an organized collaboration like in an ordinary team project. Maybe like a rough concept you worked on in succession- more or less taking over content provided by the previous member?

Well, my time is limited at the moment cause of my own project and the fact, that I'm playing another game right now that might take additional 20 hours to finish. How long would it take to finsih your game? If I can play till the end in a couple of hours, I might try it on my next day off.
I know I will forget all about it if I postpone playing it for too long.=(

OK, well in a chaingame, you do pass it along after you've worked on it to the next member. However, unlike other chaingames, we decided that it was okay to edit other peoples parts and change things to hopefully make it work better. So it's not really a true chaingame and a bit more like a collaboration, although we still passed it along and had each person do with the project as they liked.

The game is probably about 6 hours long I believe, I find it hard to judge as I've never really kept track of time for it. In a few hours you can get about halfway through.

I've started to play it a little. Yeah we're all a little busy here.
I'm always very doubtfully with chaingames. You need some very clever structured (or maybe not existing) plot to get a the story taken seriously that way. But what I experienced so far wasn't that bad. I doubt there is much you'll change after it's completed but nethertheless... here are some critic points for now:

Those bar conversations are probably meant to be innovative, but I don't really get the point. The talks aren't that important at all, so why don't put these "particular" conversations somewhere in the plot itself, and please the gamer with some sort of Logbook or Questbook or... whatever?
The fights are quite easy at the beginning... until you meet the first boss(es), and I think they are a little... beyond challenging for the first ones. It's obvious who to take out first, but to screw the second takes almost forever... (at least long enough to bust my party! :) ) but perhaps I'm doing something wrong here.

But like already mentioned, it's ok so far... nothing overwhelming but intresting enough to keep you playing.
I'm just curious, why all those more or less German names, and young, and especially blond fantasy-kiddies?
Who came up with the idea of banging some clichés around? :D

At least... I made it through. To be honest, there really where some suprises and clever ideas but they doesn't change the start impression much.
I must admit, it wasn't that hard to beat after all but it do where challenging. The final boss was a real frustation. Was it necessary to disable the safe funktion between such monster-hard battles? But beside that, they were okay. Especially the battle-mechanics got some real passion.

Afterall, the real frustration came rather from the plot than from challence. Just imagine you fighting a boss, giving everything and sweating of commotion. And when you beat 'em, the game usually says:"Just you wait, we'll see next time". Only to take the fight with Kuroi and the priest in the middle of the ritual for an instance. You take them down, but it changes nothing. Kuroi is alive, the priests are alive and you get stunned in the next second - it was almost like completely pointless! Far too often the game is unable to give the feeling that you really achived something.

The story is okay. It has it's twists and sudden changes which aren't bad but lacking a little the contribution they deserve. The relation between Valeria and Severus for example. Once he had felt love for her but drowned in hatred for her post mortem brother. I think it doesn't get much credit for it's emotionelly strengh from both of the characters. (conversations, actions)

Overall the game has damn many characters in it. Perhaps a little too many. Of course, if you do a chaingame, everbody wants to bring his special contribution. A little background story, his own figures, twists... but there is far more, than it really needs. For example Hibiki. What is she actually good for? The main conflict takes place between Kuroi and her master Ninjya (was the spelling intended?). Why don't let some of 'em die from time to time? Of course, not everyone wants to see "his" characters kick the bucket but it could have been really useful to the dramaturgy of the story line itself. Doesn't it feel more important if even the player get the feeling of an unpredictive fate of the characters?

But on the whole it was worthy the playing. It's a good RPG with (maybe not completly own but) smart ideas and a lot of great features to offer. And that's why I far more wonder why it doesn't got a little more attention here? Is the community really a little too busy to try foreign titles, or does it's english simply suck too much? I'll guess we'll never know.
But I know it's at least worthy a look. :)
